What or who do we mean when we refer to the Crown?
Q
In the context of the Treaty of Waitangi Claims process, the term "the Crown" is often used. "The Crown" refers to the government and its leaders, who represent the authority of the monarch (the King) in New Zealand. Today, the government is made up of the Governor-General (the King’s representative), The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, the government Ministers who are also Members of Parliament, and various government departments that help carry out the laws and decisions made. The King doesn’t have any direct power in day-to-day decisions.
When it comes to Treaty negotiations, the Cabinet (which is made up of government Ministers) is the group that makes all the major decisions under the term "The Crown".
